For years I’ve argued that colleges and universities should share in the repayment risk for the student loans they enable. I fully support the administration’s proposal to make institutions accountable for outcomes, particularly in programs that consistently saddle students with high debt and poor job prospects. The worst offenders include humanities and social science doctoral programs at second-tier universities, as well third-tier law schools whose return on investment is deplorable. These institutions continue to enroll students despite clear evidence that most will not see financial benefit—because the schools themselves face no consequences. This isn’t education; it’s a predatory business model. Requiring them to bear some responsibility is not a war on academia—it’s common sense.
